Important news from Education Town Hall “BUS” drivers: BadAss Teachers Association, United Opt Out, and Save Our Schools.
Jesse Walks
Jesse “Walking Man” Turner is nearing the close of his 400-mile — “Justice not Just Tests” — walk, along the East Coast. He began in Connecticut, where he teaches, reading, and is headed for Washington, DC, where he will join this year’s BAT Congress. Along the way, he has been hearing from those most affected by over-testing and other corporate reforms of our schools.
The BadAss Teachers Association, United Opt Out, and Save Our Schools recently announced plans to join the “Walking Man” for his final mile into DC. If you want to participate here is what you can do on July 24:
- 2:00 p.m. – Meet in the Courtyard at the Holiday Inn Capitol D.C., 550 C Street SW (Washington, DC)
- 2:00 to 2:45 – Make signs or pick up pre-made “Stop Destroying Our Schools” signs
- 2:45 – Begin to walk down Independence SW/SE to meet Jesse who will be walking towards us. March together to the USDOE where Jesse will give a speech. Celebration at Holiday Inn follows.
- 6:00 p.m. – Jesse will be hosting a Mock Trial of Corporate and Government Privatizers at the Grand Ballroom of the Holiday Inn Capitol.
BATs Gather
BadAss Teachers and friends are gathering July 23-26 for advocacy on Capitol Hill and for programming on July 25-26. In addition, BATs are joining with UOO and SOS for the Mock Trial (below) as well as the final mile of Jesse “Walking Man” Turner’s 400-mile trek (above). Some details on BAT programming here.
SOS Indicts
Taking a page from the Selma Jubilee, Save Our Schools is conducting a Mock Trial in conjunction with this year’s BAT Congress.
Every year organizers of the Selma Jubilee choose a current or past civil rights issue and put it “on trial,” with volunteers taking the rolls of judges, attorneys, and witnesses. It has become one of the most popular parts of the annual event commemoration of the Civil Rights movement. Using this model, Save Our Schools is conducting a Mock Trial on July 24.
The trial will be held at the Holiday Inn Capitol in the Grand Ballroom, 6 p.m. The trial is open to the public. Seating will be on a first come first serve basis. Donations will be accepted to offset costs of the event.
Charges
Rahm Emanuel, Campbell Brown, Eli Broad and Arnie Duncan for crimes against Children, Parents, and the Communities they live in.
Crimes
Privatization, school closing, school-to-prison discipline, and the use of high-stakes testing to evaluate students, teachers and schools are the atrocities, infractions and malfeasance the defendants are charged with. Each of the indictments will carry an additional count of being a hate crime.
Dramatizers
Jesse Turner ‘The Walking Man”, Dr. Denisha Jones, Aixa Rodiguez, Rosalie Friend, Dr. Yohuru Williams, Morna McDermott, Jamie Brice Hyde, Thomas Byrd and many more will be participating as defendants, witnesses for the prosecution, judges and lawyers for the defense and prosecutions.

Join in the dramatization of one response to corporate and government efforts to destroy high quality public education. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
