Memory of an Education Advocate

Janet M. Myers is remembered this week in the DC-area education community as a tireless advocate for schools and youth. Ms. Myers passed away on November 4 and was remembered on the November 7 Education Town Hall by fellow advocate Cherita Whiting.

“Whenever you called Janet, you never got ‘no’ from her,” said Ms. Whiting. “She went above and beyond.”

Ms. Whiting told host Thomas Byrd how Ms. Myers inspired her to develop her own educational leadership. Together, the two women co-founded the Ward 4 Education Council. They also served together on the “state level” DC PTA. Ms. Myers was also active in school-level PTAs, including West Elementary and Duke Ellington Senior High School. In addition, she was a long-serving Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner.

Details of a memorial are forthcoming.
