Two separate proposals were offered by District of Columbia officials this past week to put public tax money into private hands, waive the District’s own statutory regulations, and exempt schools from operating under collective bargaining agreements: Mayor Vincent Gray proposed a bill to expand charter operations into DC Public Schools. The DC Council’s Education Committee Chair, meanwhile, proposed “Innovation Schools,” another privatizing plan promoted by the American Legislative Exchange Council. Citizens in- and outside the District are encouraged to read these proposals and examine their origins.
