DC’s Imagine Southeast becoming Democracy Prep

Democracy Prep is a public charter school organization stressing civic engagement, Korean language, and discipline. The charter management organization launched in 2006 and took over Harlem Day charter in New York City in 2011. It has since opened other schools along the east coast and will soon take over DC’s Imagine Southeast charter in Ward 8. Democracy Prep, which had already been awarded a charter by the DC Public Charter School Board, was chosen to take over Imagine, “because of its proven track record in turnaround success,” according to spokesperson Alice Maggin.

Democracy Prep Congress Heights, slated to open in fall 2014, will be a PreK 3- 6th grade school preserving Imagine Southeast’s single sex, dual academy model in our 1st through 6th grade classrooms.

Dan Clark, a lead organizer with Democracy Builders, the 501(c)4 arm of Democracy Prep, joins The Education Town Hall on Thursday, February 27, to discuss the organization’s move to DC.
