DC Mayoral Control and Public School Consolidations

How is mayoral control of DC public schools faring? Hear an update from Mary Levy, education advocate on whom everyone in DC relies for understanding school finances.

In particular, how is DCPS faring as schools open following last year’s consolidations: Faith Hubbard of the Ward 5 Education Council and Eboni-Rose Thompson of the Ward 7 Education Council in discuss their ward’s disparate DCPS experiences. Thompson has seen several Ward 7 schools manage consolidation well due to principals’ active engagement of the community, while Hubbard reports seriously lower enrollment — and consequently lower funding — at several Ward 5 schools.

Artful Resistance: This WEEKEND and beyond!

Bess Altwerger and Becky Smith of Save Our Schools update listeners on upcoming events in the Campaign for Artful Resistance. Events are planned for September 14 and September 15 in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

To join planning for Artful Resistance, particularly in Washington, DC, visit Google Groups or contact vspatz at POBox.com to join the ArtfulCampaign list.

In DC and beyond, everyone is invited to participate in the National Gallery of Artful Resistance. For inspiration, organizers recommend “Time to Fight Back against Chicago Public Schools” by Matt Farmer and “Not on the Test” by Tom Chapin.

Chapin joins the September 28 Artful Resistance event in NY state.

See all Chapin’s website, “Not on the Test”.
